Don't forget this great event is STILL FREE! Everyone from the community and beyond can come and enjoy a fantastic day of music, food, drink, beer and fun in the sun!
The bands are looking great again this year with lots of old favorites coming back to join in the anniversary celebration. There'll be ten hours of FREE MUSIC! Don't forget there's plenty of room for dancing so make sure you mark the date to swing your hips kick up your heels!
If just hanging out is your style, there's lots of room for blankets and chairs with shade under the trees. We'll have a variety of traditional and ethnic food vendors to give you lots of options for great eat and drink. And Capital Brewery will be back with their fine brews.
MBS owes huge thanks to the Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission for their continued support of the MBS Blues Picnic. They've come through for us year after year in support of this community event and we're glad to be able to team up and help keep Dane County the fine place it is.
Joe Nosek's Blues Kids are gonna be back again this year. Joe and MBS are working with the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County. This great group of kids has been working hard in their own music program under the leadership of Joey B. Banks, well known local drummer, teacher and producer. We'll be hearing kids show their chops playing harp and drums. The kids will be backed up by a first rate professional blues band. This year, Joe Nosek is putting together an Madison All-Star Blues Band of madison area favorites. You can expect to hear some really great blues coming from these folks!
The Boys & Girls Club will be also be handling the food vending for burgers, hot dogs, brats, soda and water this year, so you'll be seeing these kids at the park enjoying the picnic as well as playing the Blues!

You can help your community by bringing non-perishable food items for the Food Drive. This really helps out hungry people with donations to Lakeview Lutheran Church's food pantry. Last year we filled a pickup truck with food donations. Let's do it again! Drop off canned and dry goods in the marked crates at the entrance. Your help is really appreciated!
After Picnic Blues Party!
Dan Schilling of the Shake Daddys will once again be hosting the Blues n' Brews jam starting right after the MBS Blues Picnic. WESTSIDE ANDY & GLENN DAVIS form an incomparable blues duo of harp and guitar. Known to many as a regular summer favorite on the terrace at Otto's Restaurant, these guys make the Blues Duo experience a real pleasure. You can check out their chops in this video. You'll enjoy the interplay of these two fine artists as they play a range of traditional and original favorites.
The JIMMYS are a powerhouse, eight piece band influenced by raw Chicago Blues and second line New Orleans funk. With touring experience throughout the U.S. and Europe, The Jimmys have amassed international acclaim. Members of this band have garnered Wisconsin's top honors in Blues to Grammy recognition to platinum records! "Guaranteed to make you shake a tail feathers!"
The Jimmys will be joined by Milwaukee area favorite guitar master Perry Weber. Perry's been picking Blues licks for years with his band, the DeVilles, and will definitely throw some hot spice into the mix!
The Jimmys haven't been sitten around doin' nothing lately! Their new album "Gimme the Jimmys" is making big waves in Blues music listening. Reaching the heights of their live performances and throwing in some new twists as well, this album is a "must have".
JOE'S BLUES KIDS have been a highly successful project of Joe Nosek of the Cash Box Kings for several years now. Joe has been working with community kids to teach Madison's youth about Blues music and start the next generation of Blues musicians.
This year, the BLUES KIDS are again at the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County for all their training and practice in playin' the Blues. They'll be back on stage at this year's picnic, singing, blowin' harp, and stampin' their feet backed up by a Madison Favorites All-Star Blues Band. Over the years, the kids have been honing their skills and writing their own songs, too. Their enthusiasm is a real crowd pleaser, year after year. And the Madison area favorites that Joe Nosek has gathered together will bring you a fine Madison Blues sound.
SHARI DAVIS AND THE HOOTCHY KOOTCHY BAND lay a musical range of jazz, swing, and blues. Shari's vocals and dancing encourage the audience to do the same; seldom is there a bare dance floor once the Hootchy-Kootchy Band takes the stage. Tunes include originals by some of the band members as well as renditions of popular and vintage swing. In this video you can see the energy of the band and the enormous talent of the musicians. Shari is the current president of the Madison Blues Society.
TATE AND THE 008 have been playing throughout Southern Wisconsin for many years. James Earl Tate has graced the Madison blues scene since the mid 1960's. Traveling to Madison by way of Mississippi, where he was the youngest of a family of nine, Tate has a rich history in music. He traveled the world with the great Luther Allison as soundman and while forming a close friendship with Luther was exposed to many blues legends. Tate has encouraged and supported many budding and outstanding blues musicians. You can now hear Tate at many Madison events and clubs and will leave a better person for doing so.
One of the most versatile groups around, HOWARD LUEDTKE AND BLUE MAX is a Western Wisconsin rock blues band that performs all over the Midwest. Many who have seen Howard and Blue Max have become fans of Howard's talented slide guitar playing and the band's rockin' electric blues sound.
Howard Luedtke has been playing guitar since the arrival of the Beatles in 1964. After playing with several rock, country and blues bands, he formed the Blue Max band in 1982. Joining Howard since 1987 is his wife, Deb Klossner originally from New Ulm, Minnesota, on bass, and several talented drummers from all over the region.
Howard and Blue Max have opened up for or played with some of the best in the blues world, including: Long John Baldrey, Sugar Blue, Lonnie Brooks, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, Debbie Davies, Tinsley Ellis, Jeff Healey, Jimmy Johnson, Kenny Neal, A.C. Reed, Eddie Shaw and the Wolfgang, James Solberg, Hubert Sumlin, Koko Taylor, George Thorogood and the Destroyers, Joe Louis Walker and Howard's guitar idol, Johnny Winter.
And we have a special treat for this year's Blues Picnic, Howard will be joined by Madison's original Funky Drummer, Clyde Stubblefield! Clyde will be manning the drum set to give this group a special dose of his extraordinary talent!
Headlining this year's picnic will be the RICHIE RICH AND THE CHI-TOWN BLUES BAND. Richie formed the band "Richie Rich and The Funky White Boys" and released its first record, I am Frisky Whiskey. The title track called "Frisky Whiskey" made it to number 7 on the IMN Music Charts. Later, Richie changed the name to Richie Rich and The Chi-Town Blues Band which more adequately reflects the roots of its members.
Rich Ryan ("Richie Rich") is a Chicago born blues singer born under the name Daniel Joseph O'Brien. Richie began playing the piano, drums and saxophone at a young age and still plays piano and guitar to this day. He is influenced by the sound of Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, BB King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, Louis Armstrong and many others. As a teenager, he frequented many blues clubs including The Checkerboard Lounge, Kingston Mines, Blue Chicago and many other clubs using a fake ID to get in. He would also periodically sit-in with the players on stage.
Check out this great Chicago sound on YouTube as the band plays some of their hits as the Funky White Boys and the Chi-Town Blues Band.
- Fat Cat Shuffle - an original from the CD "From The Streets"
- Fancy Freedom - a true blues tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces
- Freestyle Jam - with Michael Coleman and Stephen Koerner
And joining Richie for a hot set of some Wild Woman Blues is Shannon Curfman! Shannon's down from the Twin Cities for a special visit to Madison's Blues Picnic to complete this amazing day of great music.
