New documentary film brings the Blues from Angola Prison
Beginning Thursday June 28 at Sundance Cinema Madison

Announcing a special touring presentation of the acclaimed documentary, MUSIC FROM THE BIG HOUSE, a powerful film that follows a Blues woman to a legendary prison on a quest for redemption through music. We will be holding a special screening PLUS a Blues performance event at the Sundance Kabuki Cinema in Madison on Thursday June 28th.

"WOW. WOW!" writes Blog Critics. " MUSIC FROM THE BIG HOUSE is a film that anyone with hope in his heart will appreciate." See Magazine says, "You won't be the same once you've seen it." And Cine Source Magazine remarks, "Excuse me for gushing, but filmmaking does not get any better than this. It is one of those documentaries that deserve to be seen by everyone."

MUSIC FROM THE BIG HOUSE follows Rita Chiarelli, Canada's Goddess of the Blues, on a pilgrimage to one of the birthplaces of blues, Louisiana's Angola Prison - historically the bloodiest prison in America. Rita's trip turns into a historic jailhouse performance, playing and collaborating with inmates serving life sentences. Their shared bond of music, and Chiarelli's ebullient personality, draw striking revelations from the inmates. Rather than sensational stories of inmates, we witness remarkable voices of hope as their love of music radiates humanity and redemption on their quest for forgiveness.

You can check out the movie trailer HERE. And you can get a copy of the soundtrack HERE.

Ms. Chiarelli will tour with the film in 60 cities, singing the Blues and conducting Q&A's in-theater, coming to Madison's Sundance Kabuki Cinema beginning on Thursday, June 28. Ms. Chairelli will be present for the Friday, June 29 performance. MUSIC FROM THE BIG HOUSE will resonate with the Blues audience and community and all who share a common love for music. The film is an absolute celebration of Blues music, in all its forms.

The search for the nation's top undiscovered blues guitar player

Guitar Center has an annual, nation-wide electric blues guitar contest called "Battle of the Blues" (formerly called "King of the Blues") that's open to all interested guitarists (except GC employees & their families). The competition starts at the store level at all 226 Guitar Center stores across the country, with preliminary rounds on Tuesday evenings May 8th, May 15th, & May 22nd. The store-level final round is on Tuesday evening June 5th. All participants get a GC discount card, and winners receive prizes at each stage of the competition.

The Grand Prize winner receives $25,000 in cash plus, the six finalists will perform at the Grand Finals featuring Joe Bonamassa! And there are lots of other prizes for Grand, Regional, Distict, and Store level winners. Check out the full Prize List.

Sign up in person at Guitar Center, which is located next door to Office Depot, right across the street from Westgate Mall. A maximum of 10 contestants plus 2 alternates can sign up for each of the three preliminary rounds on May 8th, 15th, & 22nd, allowing for 30 total contestants and 6 total alternates. Most of the slots are full for May 8th, but plenty of slots are open for May 15th & May 22nd. Guitarists can sign up until May 7th or until all the slots are filled, whichever comes first.

See the link below for backing tracks, rules, and all the details: BATTLE OF THE BLUES!

Winners from the store-level competition move on to multi-state district contests, then regional contests, and then the national finals in Los Angeles, CA later in the Summer. Madison has had some great contestants in recent years who have gone far in this electric blues guitar tournament, including Bill Roberts and John Masino. The judges for this year's contest are well-known Madison-based blues guitarists: Paul Filipowicz, Don Rembert, and Aaron Williams, with Cliff Fredericksen as a reserve judge.
